When Do Kids Need Tonsillectomy

Tonsils are cone-shaped lumps of tissue embedded in the throat.

Tonsillectomy is defined as a surgical procedure performed with or without 

Adenoidectomy that involves complete removal   of tonsils including its sheath (capsule) 

There are various indications for tonsillectomy.   The common causes are like

  1. Recurrent throat  infections  leading  to surgery  and indiscriminate  usage of  antibiotics  and  problems

Tied to slow growth, bed wetting, hyperactive behavior.

The common causes are like i) Recurrent throat infections leading to surgery and indiscriminate usage of antibiotics and problems Tied to slow growth, bed witting, hyperactive behavior. ii) Sleep disorder breathing. Now a days this has become one of the common reasons for tonsillectomy which includes the symptoms like excessive day time sleepiness, insomnia, soaring, breathing trough mouth, sudden stoppage of breathing during sleep, _____ of the time, this above conditions goes unrecognized by parents, but it has detrimental effects on the body like stomach and lungs. Other Indications like : Chronic Rhinosinisitis and symptoms of constant running nose, headache, difficulty in breathing through nose irritability, can be relieved by adenoTonsillectomy. Hearing disorders due to retention of fluid in the middle ear is some times caused by blocage of the tube connecting nose and throat due to chronic adenotonsillitis. Lack of clarity of speech and difficulty in swallowing due to large size of tonsils can be improved by adenotonsillectomy. This article is to emphasize the need for proper selection of candidates for this procedure at the same time avoiding unnecessary surgeries in children who does not and to achieve maximum benefits and prevent unavoidable complications.
